Adson Forceps
Adson forceps are short, fine-tipped thumb forceps designed by the American neurosurgeon Alfred Washington Adson. At roughly 12 cm they are shorter than standard dressing forceps, and the broad, cross-serrated grip tapers to a narrow tip — which is what makes them the default instrument for handling skin edges and subcutaneous tissue during closure.Choosing between the patternsThe pattern you need depends on the tissue. Toothed Adson forceps carry 1×2 teeth and are intended for skin and dense fascia, where a positive grip matters more than atraumatic handling. Serrated Adson forceps have no teeth and are used where crushing must be avoided. Adson-Brown forceps sit between the two: instead of a single pair of teeth they carry rows of fine teeth, typically 7×7 or 9×9, which spreads the grip across a wider area and is why they are favoured in plastic and reconstructive work.Micro-Adson forceps are a finer version for microsurgical and ophthalmic use. Tungsten carbide variants carry brazed carbide inserts at the tip — they grip harder, hold their edge far longer, and are identifiable by gold-coloured handles. Titanium versions are lighter and non-magnetic.Note that Adson artery forceps are a different instrument entirely: a ratcheted haemostat, not a thumb forceps, despite sharing the name.Every pattern below is made in stainless steel and inspected in the United States before it ships.
