Description
Ziegler Splinter Forceps
Ziegler splinter forceps are short, fine-tipped forceps for lifting small foreign bodies. They measure 9 cm. Their tips meet closely, so they can pick up tiny fragments from the eye surface or lid.
What Splinter Forceps Do
Splinter forceps grasp small objects rather than tissue. For example, they can lift a loose particle from the conjunctiva or a splinter from lid skin. Embedded corneal bodies, however, often need a needle or spud first. So think of these forceps as the last step, not the first.
A Short 9 cm Body
The short length gives fine control. Also it lets you brace your hand on the face while you work. So the tips stay steady at the slit lamp or under a loupe.
Ziegler Technique Tips
Approach the object from the side, not head-on. Then close the tips gently, just enough to hold. Squeezing too hard can flick a small fragment away or crush it.
- 9 cm length for close control
- Fine tips that meet evenly
- Good for loose surface bodies
- Reusable after sterilization
Pairing Splinter Forceps With Spuds
Many clinics keep Ziegler splinter forceps in a foreign-body kit. Typically, a needle or spud loosens the object first. Then the forceps lift it away.
Keeping the Tips Aligned
Check that the tips close along their full length. If they cross or gap, the grip fails. Also slip a tip guard over the jaws in storage, because a drop can bend them.
Ziegler forceps ship non-sterile; reprocess them by cleaning and sterilization, then reuse them. Splinter forceps steel is stainless, made to ASTM F899, and we check finished pairs in the United States. Coverage for these splinter forceps runs three years against manufacturing defects. For lash removal, see the Barraquer cilia forceps. Find more in our ophthalmology instrument section, or read the FAQs.
These forceps suit professional users only. See the Ziegler care guide and delivery details for handling and shipping.
