Barraquer Cilia Forceps
Barraquer cilia forceps are made for one job: gripping and removing eyelashes. They measure 10.5 cm and have flat tips that meet evenly. So a single lash stays held as you draw it out.
Built for Epilation
Cilia forceps, however, differ from tissue forceps. Their tips are flat and smooth rather than toothed. As a result, they grip a fine lash without cutting it, and the lash comes out whole with its root.
Who Uses Cilia Forceps
In general, clinics use cilia forceps for trichiasis, where lashes turn in and rub the eye. They also help with stray or broken lashes along the lid margin. Many general eye clinics keep a pair at each slit lamp.
A Practical Epilation Method
Good light and magnification make epilation quick. Then a steady hand does the rest.
- Rest your little finger on the cheekbone
- Grip the lash close to the skin
- Pull slowly in the direction of growth
- Check the root came out with the lash
Why 10.5 cm Works
The 10.5 cm length fits easily between thumb and finger. Also it lets you rest your hand while you look through the slit lamp. That makes repeated pulls less tiring during a busy clinic.
Keeping the Tips Flat
Above all, the tips must meet evenly to hold a lash. So test them on a fine thread now and then. If a gap shows, the grip will slip. Also store the forceps closed in a guard, and clean them after each patient.
