These Young bending pliers form loops, stops and small bends in archwire. For round wire, the Young pattern works between .014” and .028”. Edgewise wire may go as large as .022” x .028”.

Why the Two Wire Figures Matter

Round and rectangular wire load the beaks in different ways. So the catalogue gives a figure for each. Keep round wire inside .014” to .028”. Then keep edgewise wire at or under .022” x .028”. Stay within both, and the beaks hold their shape.

A Good Fit for Archwire Visits

Most offices reach for a loop plier during archwire changes and later during finishing. At that stage, you may need a small loop, a step or a quick tweak. The Young pattern handles that kind of detail work well. However, it is not meant for heavy clasp wire or facebow wire.

Small Steps That Add Years

Wipe the beaks soon after each use, before debris can set in the joint. Next, check that the tips still close square. A plier with even tips makes clean, repeatable loops. Also, avoid using the beaks to cut or pry, because that bends them out of line.
