If you want a short list that still covers a lot, start here. Our Tomes extracting forceps come in four figures. Together they handle roots in both arches and the lower canines, premolars and molars. That makes them a good base for a lean extraction kit.

Four Figures, Two Jobs

The Tomes pattern splits into two groups. One group takes roots. The other takes whole lower teeth from canine back to molar. Because of this, a small practice can stock one pattern and still meet most routine cases.

What Each Option Does

Choosing Between 69 and 85

Ask first whether a crown is still present. If it is, and the tooth sits in the lower arch, reach for 85 or 85A. However, once the crown is gone, the fine 69 beaks give a better grip on the root. The 69 SK suits small mouths or tight spaces. Many users keep one of each figure on hand. We sell every figure singly.

Grip and Palm Position

Hold the handles in the palm, with your thumb between them near the joint. This gives you fine control as you seat the beaks. For lower teeth, stand so your forearm lines up with the handles. Then set the beaks deep on the root, clear of the crown. Luxate with steady buccal and lingual moves before you deliver the tooth.

Care Between Patients

Brush the joint and beaks soon after use. Next, run the forceps through your washer or ultrasonic bath with the joint open. Finally, dry them well before you pack them.
