Description
Sullivan Gum Scissors
Sullivan gum scissors are 15 cm soft tissue scissors for trimming gingiva, tissue tags and flap margins. Their blades carry a serrated edge, which holds slippery tissue in place while the cut closes. Before shipping, a member of our Georgia team checks each pair, giving it a US inspection.
What the Serrations Do
Smooth blades can push wet, soft tissue forward instead of cutting it. Serrations grip the tissue at the moment of closing. As a result, the cut stays where you placed it. That is why gum scissors usually favor a serrated edge over the plain edge of a suture scissor. Also, serrations tend to tolerate the fibrous texture of gingiva better than a fine, smooth blade, so the pair suits recontouring after a flap or a gingivectomy.
Straight or Curved: How to Choose
The Straight pattern cuts in line with the handles. It works well on facial surfaces and anterior tissue that you see directly. The Curved pattern, by contrast, sweeps the blades to one side, so it follows the arch and reaches lingual or posterior tissue with less wrist strain. Many periodontal trays carry one of each, while a general practice may start with the curved pair.
Length, Steel and Defect Cover
Both versions are 15 cm long and made from stainless steel to the ASTM F899 grade for surgical instruments. Moreover, we back each pair for three years against manufacturing defects. Because the pair is shipped unsterilized, swing the blades apart, brush the box joint and then autoclave it ahead of any procedure.
Steel facts are on the ASTM F899 listing. Browse Diagnostic, Periodontal & Restorative Instruments for more periodontal tools, and pair the scissors with Goldman-Fox gingivectomy knives for gingival contouring. Questions? See the FAQs.
