Description
Woodward Extracting Forceps
Woodward extracting forceps are a lower molar pattern. We offer them in two figures, Fig. FH and Fig. FS. Both target the mandibular molars, where roots are broad and bone is dense.
The Woodward name in a lower kit
Eponym forceps carry the name of the clinician linked to the design. The Woodward pattern sits beside common lower molar figures rather than in place of them. In fact, many dentists keep one eponym pair as a backup grip for hard cases.
Fig. FH and Fig. FS
- Fig. FH: lower molars.
- Fig. FS: lower molars.
- Each figure ships on its own, with no set needed.
The two figures share one purpose. So the choice rests on how each sits in your hand. Start with one; then order the second if you want a spare for back-to-back cases.
Where the palm sits
For lower molars, many operators stand to the side or behind the patient. The palm wraps the handles while the thumb rests between them. This keeps force steady and lets you feel the root give. Also, support the jaw with your free hand.
Moving a lower molar
As with other mandibular patterns, the working end sits close to square with the grip. Place it low on the root, below the crown. Next, rock the tooth buccally and lingually with slow, firm strokes. Once it loosens, lift it out along the easiest path.
Keeping the hinge smooth
Blood and debris can dry in the joint. Therefore, rinse the box joint soon after the case. Then open the handles fully during cleaning. A drop of instrument lubricant before sterilizing keeps the action free.
What comes with each order
Your Woodward figure follows our specification, and we check it here in the United States; its alloy matches ASTM F899. It ships not yet sterile, but it serves many visits once you reprocess it. If workmanship ever lets you down, we stand by it for three years against manufacturing defects, no quibbles. For licensed dental professionals. The care and sterilization page and shipping page cover the details.
