Why Slim Beaks Help in the Mandible

On lower figures, the beaks sit near ninety degrees to the handles. That way, your wrist stays in a natural line while you work down into the socket. Fine beaks also slip between root and bone with less pressure. As a result, a lower root extracting forceps can often lift a root without a flap.

Start with the root you see most often. For very thin roots, Fig. 49L has the slimmest beaks in this group. Fig. 74XN also suits crowded lower incisors, so it can double as an anterior tool. Then decide on the grip; the fitting handle changes only that, making it anatomical. You can buy each figure singly.

Working a Retained Root

First, clear the socket so you can see root surface. Next, seat the beaks as far apically as the bone allows. Then use slow buccal and lingual moves, plus a little rotation if the root is round. Stop and re-seat when the grip slips, because a fresh hold is safer than more force.

Checking Beak Alignment

Fine tips can spring apart after heavy use. So hold the closed forceps to a light now and then. If the tips cross or splay, retire that figure.
