St Marks Retractor

The St Marks retractor is a deep pelvic retractor for rectal surgery. Its broad, lipped blade holds the pelvic organs forward to expose the rectum.

Three options

The 29 cm model comes with a smaller blade of 35 x 45 mm and 130 x 60 mm. Alternatively, it comes with a larger blade of 60 x 45 mm and 180 x 60 mm. The 33 cm model carries the larger blade.

Choosing a size

A longer handle helps in a deep or narrow pelvis. Meanwhile, the blade size decides how much tissue it holds back. So many teams keep two sizes on the tray.

Using it in the pelvis

Surgeons place the blade behind the bladder or uterus and draw it forward to open the space in front of the rectum. Then an assistant holds it steady while the dissection continues. Because the blade is broad, it protects the tissue it holds back. Also, swap to the longer handle if the pelvis is deep, so the assistant’s hands stay out of the light. Finally, release the pressure from time to time during long cases.

Care of the St Marks retractor

Clean the blade and handle after each case. Then dry the retractor, and hang or lay it flat so the blade lip keeps its shape.
