The Kocher intestinal clamp is a widely used bowel clamp. It comes in four lengths, straight or curved, with standard or atraumatic jaws.

Sizes and jaws

Every length, from the 13 cm baby clamp up to 28 cm, comes with standard or atraumatic jaws. So you can build a full set from one pattern.

Standard or atraumatic

Standard jaws hold firmly. By contrast, atraumatic jaws spread pressure more gently, so they suit bowel you plan to keep.

Straight or curved

A straight clamp suits open, accessible bowel. Meanwhile, a curved clamp helps when you need to work around the mesentery.

Using it in bowel surgery

Surgeons often use two of these clamps side by side, one on each side of the planned division. Then they cut between them, so neither end spills. Because the pattern comes in several lengths, you can match the clamp to the width of the bowel. Also, the baby size suits small bowel and fine work. When the step is complete, loosen the ratchet in stages and look over the bowel wall where the jaws sat.

Care of the Kocher intestinal clamp

Hold the clamp to the light after cleaning and check the jaw grooves are clear. Also, dry it completely, and store it unlocked to ease strain on the ratchet.
