The Mayo-Robson intestinal clamp has long, slim jaws for holding bowel. It comes in 21, 23 and 25 cm, straight or curved.

Standard and atraumatic

Standard jaws come in all three lengths. In addition, the 25 cm size comes with atraumatic jaws for gentler handling.

Choosing a length

A 21 cm clamp suits a shallow field. By contrast, the 25 cm clamp reaches deeper. Therefore many trays carry two lengths.

Using it in bowel surgery

The slim jaws suit bowel that needs a gentle, even hold. Then the ratchet keeps the grip steady while you divide or join the tissue. Because the clamp comes in three lengths, you can match it to the depth of the field. Also, many surgeons prefer the atraumatic version on bowel that stays in place. When you release it, open slowly and inspect the tissue. In addition, straight and curved versions let you work around the mesentery without twisting the bowel.

Slim jaws can bend if you drop them, so handle the clamp with care. Clean the jaws, rinse and dry it, then check they still meet along their full length.
