Brunner Intestinal Clamp Forceps

The Brunner intestinal clamp holds bowel during resection and anastomosis. It measures 24 cm, and you choose standard or atraumatic jaws.

Standard or atraumatic

Standard jaws give a firm hold. Atraumatic jaws, however, hold with less force on the wall, which suits bowel you intend to join.

On the tray

Many teams keep one of each jaw type. That way, the scrub nurse can pass the right clamp for each stage of the operation.

In the operating field

Many surgeons place the standard version on the specimen side and the atraumatic version on the side they keep. That way, one eponym covers both roles in the same operation. Hold the clamp at right angles to the bowel, so the grip spreads evenly across the wall. Also, keep the ratchet on its first or second tooth where possible, since more pressure rarely helps. When the step is done, ease it off and look at the tissue.

Care of the Brunner intestinal clamp

Scrub the jaw grooves with a soft brush straight after the case. Then rinse and dry the clamp. Before storing it, confirm the ratchet holds on every tooth.
