Description
SharpTrace™ Yonah Posterior Sickle Scaler
The SharpTrace Yonah sickle scaler is our rigid, double-ended posterior scaler in the R13/14 pattern. It is made for the tenacious deposits that a lighter instrument skates over. Its shanks are stiff, which means effort at the handle arrives at the blade instead of being lost to flex.
Why a rigid sickle for posterior teeth
Heavy, ledged calculus on molars and premolars needs a firm, controlled stroke. A flexible shank absorbs that stroke and blunts your tactile feedback. Yonah keeps the shank stiff, therefore a single pull can lift a ledge rather than chipping at it. The two mirror-image ends let you reach mesial and distal surfaces without changing grip.
The R13/14 blade pattern
Each working end carries a pointed sickle blade with two cutting edges and a triangular cross-section. The angled shank brings the tip into posterior embrasures and around contact areas. Use it supragingivally, or just below the margin where tissue is loose.
Using the SharpTrace Yonah sickle scaler
Adapt the tip to the tooth with the face at roughly 70 to 80 degrees. Then engage below the deposit and use short, overlapping pull strokes away from the gingiva. Finally, follow with a curette for root surfaces and deeper pockets.
Sharpening and reprocessing
Keep the edges keen, because a dull sickle burnishes calculus instead of removing it. Sharpen with a flat stone, holding the original bevel. Rinse soon after use, clean the blades with a soft brush and sterilize the scaler fully dry.
