Description
Pratt Rectal Speculum
The Pratt rectal speculum gives a long, even view of the anal canal. It measures 21.5 cm overall, with an 85 x 25 mm blade.
A longer blade
At 85 mm, the blade reaches further than many office specula. Therefore it suits procedures that sit higher in the canal.
In the clinic
Proctologists use the Pratt for inspection, banding and minor surgery. In addition, the long handles keep your hands well clear of the field.
Technique tips
Warm and lubricate the blades before insertion. Then introduce them closed along the line of the canal. Once they are in place, open the handles gently until you have a clear view. Also, ask an assistant to hold the handles if you need both hands for a procedure. Because the blade is long, withdraw slowly at the end so the tips do not catch the mucosa. For longer procedures, an assistant can steady the instrument, which reduces fatigue for the operator.
Care of the Pratt rectal speculum
Rinse the instrument after use, then scrub the blades and joint with a soft brush. Dry it fully before sterilization.
