Description
Sims Rectal Speculum
The Sims rectal speculum opens the anal canal for examination and minor procedures. Its blade measures 70 mm long by 15 mm wide, a size that suits routine office work.
Standard or fenestrated jaw
Pick the standard jaw for a plain, closed blade. Alternatively, choose the fenestrated jaw, which has an open window in the blade. That window gives you a view of, and access to, the wall of the canal between the blades.
Where it fits
Colorectal surgeons and proctology clinics use this pattern for inspection, banding and small excisions. In addition, its compact blade works well where a longer speculum would feel clumsy.
Positioning and technique
Warm the blade to body temperature and apply a water-based lubricant before insertion. Then introduce it gently along the axis of the canal while the patient bears down slightly. Once it is in place, a light, steady pressure opens the view. Meanwhile, good lighting matters as much as the blade itself, so a headlight or an angled lamp helps. After the procedure, withdraw slowly to avoid pinching the mucosa between the jaws.
Care of the Sims rectal speculum
Rinse off debris right after the procedure. Then scrub the blade and hinge with a soft brush. Dry it well before sterilization, and store it away from sharp instruments.
