Description

P.K. Thomas Carvers

Dental technicians who build crowns in wax often follow an additive approach, cusp by cusp. P.K. Thomas carvers are the classic instrument series for that technique, named after the dentist who taught it. Accordingly, Intrace USA, an Atlanta distributor, offers all five figures from the carver pages of the supplier catalogue.

Building Occlusal Anatomy Drop by Drop

In additive waxing, the technician heats an instrument tip, picks up molten wax and lets it flow into place. First come the cusp cones, then the ridges, and finally the fossae and grooves. So the tooth form grows in controlled stages rather than coming from a carved block. As a result, the occlusal contacts can be planned against the opposing model.

How the Five Figures Divide the Work

In common teaching use of Thomas carvers, the lower numbers are wax adding instruments, while the higher numbers handle burnishing and carving. Teachers usually describe Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 as the larger and smaller wax adders. Technicians often use Fig. 3 to smooth and burnish, and Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 refine grooves and contours. However, the catalogue lists only the figure numbers, so compare the photos to confirm each tip.

Buying Single Thomas Carvers or the Series

Students and new technicians usually buy all five, since the technique uses them in sequence. On the other hand, an experienced lab may only need to replace one worn tip. We sell each figure separately here, which suits both cases.

Inspection and the Three Year Commitment

We look over every carver in the United States before it leaves our shelf. We also guarantee the tips and shanks of all five figures for three years against manufacturing defects that surface during normal waxing work. They ship non-sterile; for clinical chairside use, clean and sterilize them first.

For steel grades, see ASTM F899. See the restorative and lab instrument category, add our Wax and Modelling Carvers for more shaping tips, or visit the FAQs.
