Description

Mead Extracting Forceps

Mead extracting forceps give you a small series of four figures that covers both arches. Each figure has one clear job, so you can build a lean kit without a long list of numbers to learn. The whole series is made to our specification, with every figure inspected in the United States before stocking.

Four Figures Split by Arch

The Mead pattern divides the mouth into four tasks. Md1 and Md2 serve the upper arch, while Md3 and Md4 serve the lower arch. As a result, all four together give you anterior, root and molar cover top and bottom. However, you do not need the whole series, because we sell each figure on its own.

Matching a Mead Figure to the Case

  • Fig. Md1 – upper anteriors and roots
  • Fig. Md2 – upper molars
  • Fig. Md3 – lower roots
  • Fig. Md4 – lower molars

First, decide on the arch. Next, ask whether the crown is still whole or only a root is left. For example, a broken lower molar with no crown to hold points you to Md3 rather than Md4. Likewise, Md1 suits a retained upper incisor root.

How the Hand Sits

On the upper arch, most people rest the handles in the palm, beaks facing up. On the lower arch, the hand turns over so the beaks point down. Lower figures set their beaks near a right angle to the handles, so this grip suits Md3 and Md4. Keep a light hold until the beaks sit well.

Seat Low, Then Luxate

Place the beaks low on the root surface rather than on enamel. Then luxate with slow buccal and lingual pressure, and add rotation only where the root form allows it. Finally, deliver the tooth along the easiest path. This order helps avoid a fractured root.

Cover and Upkeep for the Series

Your Mead forceps reach you non-sterile, so clean and sterilise them ahead of the first patient; after that they serve again and again. The stainless steel meets ASTM F899. Also, each Mead figure earns a full three years against manufacturing defects, and that clock starts when the box reaches your desk. To compare other shapes, browse every pattern in our extracting forceps range, or look at the Nevius forceps for upper molars and canines. Our FAQ page covers ordering and returns.
