Description
Adson Suction Tube
The Adson suction tube is a slim metal aspirator with an angled shaft. This model is 21 cm long with a 4 mm bore. Surgeons use it to keep a deep or narrow field clear of blood and fluid, so they can see what they are doing.
Where the Adson pattern fits
Alfred Adson was a neurosurgeon, and the pattern is still common in neurosurgery. However, the same tube also works in oral and maxillofacial cases, ENT and general surgery. In each case, the bend lets your fingers stay clear of what you need to watch.
Why 21 cm and 4 mm
At 21 cm, the tube reaches into a deep cavity while the hub rests in the palm. Meanwhile, the 4 mm bore moves fluid briskly without being so wide that it grabs soft tissue. For a finer tip, a smaller bore suits delicate work better.
At a glance
- Overall length: 21 cm
- Bore: 4 mm
- Angled, one-piece metal shaft
- Fits standard suction tubing at the hub
Using it well
Hold the tube like a pencil, with the angle pointing away from your view. Then rest the tip near the pool of fluid rather than on tissue. As a result, you clear the field without drawing tissue into the bore.
Cleaning a long lumen
Run water through the tube straight after surgery, because dried blood is hard to shift. Next, pass a fitting brush through the full length. Finally, check that light shows clearly through the bore before you sterilize it.
The tube ships non-sterile and goes back into use after each clean and sterilization cycle. Its stainless steel follows ASTM F899. Our warranty on it runs three years against manufacturing defects. Should you need a choice of bores at 18 cm, try the McKesson suction tube. You can also browse our suction and aspiration tools or the neurosurgery range, and our FAQ page covers ordering.
