What These Chisels Do in Osseous Surgery

Once a flap is raised, the surgeon removes small ledges and spicules of bone and smooths the contour. A chisel shaves thin layers with a push or pull stroke. Because the blade works by hand, the operator feels the bone and controls each pass. In addition, hand chisels reach interproximal crests that a large bur handpiece cannot.
