McGivney Ligator Drum

The ligator drum carries the elastic band on a hemorrhoid ligator. Both sizes here share a 10 mm diameter and differ only in length.

11 mm or 16 mm

A shorter 11 mm drum draws in less tissue. On the other hand, the 16 mm drum takes a larger bite. So choose by the size of the hemorrhoids you usually treat.

Keeping spares on hand

Drums can dent or wear at the rim. Therefore many clinics keep a spare, so one damaged drum never cancels a list.

Fitting and swapping drums

Check the drum screws or pushes firmly onto the ligator before each clinic. Then load bands with a cone rather than by hand. If a drum shows a dent, a crack or a rough rim, replace it at once, because damage can tear a band or catch tissue. Also, keep the two lengths apart in storage, so staff pick the right one quickly. Finally, record which length each clinician prefers, since habits differ between operators.

Cleaning the ligator drum

Brush the inside of the drum after use, because tissue can collect there. Then rinse, dry and inspect the rim before sterilization.
