Description
Jennings
When a patient is sedated or under general anesthesia, the mouth must stay open without effort from them. Jennings mouth gags are self-retaining frames. They hold the jaws apart so the surgeon has steady access. Our supplier lists it among its mouth gags in three sizes: 11 cm, 13 cm and 15 cm.
Sizing: 11 cm, 13 cm or 15 cm
Each option is a different overall size. The 11cm version suits children and smaller adults. Many offices keep the 13cm middle size as their default. For larger adult mouths, use the 15cm version. So, if you treat a mixed patient base, stocking two sizes avoids forcing a poor fit.
Placing the Gag Safely
First, check that the lips and tongue sit clear of the frame. Next, seat the gag over the incisors and open it gradually. Then confirm the opening is enough for access, but no wider. Because overstretching strains the jaw joint, aim for the least opening that works. Also, release it briefly during long cases.
Jennings or Molt?
Both hold the mouth open, yet they work differently. A Molt gag props the jaws from the side between posterior teeth. In contrast, Jennings mouth gags work from the front of the mouth. Therefore, many oral surgeons keep both and choose by procedure site.
Care, Checks and Coverage
Each Jennings gag arrives non-sterile; scrub every hinge, then autoclave. A staff member in the United States cycles each frame through its full range before it is packed. If a part breaks from a production flaw, all three sizes stay covered for three years against manufacturing defects, letting you replace it at no cost.
Its stainless steel conforms to ASTM F899. For side access instead, see our Molt mouth gag. You can also look through the maxillofacial surgery instruments or read our FAQs about gag sizes.
Intended for trained anesthesia and oral surgery teams. Hinge scrubbing: care and sterilization. Transit and tracking: shipping and delivery.
