If you like a simple tray that lets the material do the work, a perforated plain border tray is a good fit. The rows of holes give the hold. There is no bead along the edge, so the border stays smooth and easy to trim.

How Perforations Hold the Set

When you seat the tray, soft alginate flows through each hole. Once it sets, those small plugs anchor the impression to the steel. As a result, many dentists skip adhesive for routine alginate work. Still, a light coat can help with elastomers.

When a Smooth Edge Helps

Without a rim lock, the margin has no lip that can dig into the cheek or lip. Some clinicians also find a plain edge easier to extend with wax for a deep palate or a long arch.

From XXS to XL

Every size comes in an upper or a lower form. That makes 12 options: XL, L, M, S, XS and XXS for each arch. Across the range, the largest upper measures 81×63 mm, and the smallest lower measures 59×50 mm. The sizes match our rim-lock trays, so you can swap styles without learning a new chart.

Choosing Between Sizes

• Hold the tray over the arch and center the handle on the midline.
• Check that the back edge reaches past the last molar.
• Leave room for a few millimeters of material at the sides.
• If two sizes seem close, pick the one with even space.

Good Habits at the Sink

Rinse off alginate soon after use, before it dries in the holes. Then a brush and an ultrasonic bath will clear the perforations.
