Description

Hollenback Small Amalgam Carvers

The small hollenback amalgam carver is a double-ended hand instrument for refining a new amalgam restoration before it sets. First, the clinician condenses the alloy into the preparation. Then the thin working ends trim excess and restore cusp slopes, grooves and marginal contours. This page lists three catalogue figures, and each comes on two handle patterns.

Fig. ½, Fig. 3 and Fig. 3S Side by Side

The supplier catalogue shows Fig. ½, Fig. 3 and Fig. 3S on its amalgam carver page under the Hollenback name. Each one carries a differently shaped tip, so many dentists keep more than one on the tray. For example, a practice may use one figure for occlusal anatomy and another for proximal margins. Because the catalogue does not describe the blades in words, we suggest comparing the product photos before you order.

What Style 2 Means on This Page

Every figure also appears as a Style 2 option. That label marks a second handle pattern taken from the same catalogue page, with the same Hollenback figure on the end. However, no written note in the catalogue explains the handle change, so the photos are the best guide. Choose the handle that matches the rest of your restorative cassette.

Working Wet Alloy Without Dragging It

Amalgam carves best while it still resists the blade slightly. So a light stroke that rides on the enamel margin keeps the restoration flush without pulling material out. In addition, a clean, dry blade between strokes helps the carver move smoothly over the surface.

Steel, Inspection and Warranty

The carver is stainless steel made to ASTM F899 grades, and we inspect each piece in the United States before shipping it from Atlanta. Each figure ships non-sterile, so it needs cleaning and a validated sterilization cycle before the first patient. Every Hollenback carver we sell is warranted three years against manufacturing defects in its steel blades.

Read the ASTM F899 standard for surgical steel grades, or browse our diagnostic, periodontal and restorative instruments. To place the alloy before carving, see the amalgam carriers. Questions about ordering are answered in our FAQs.
