A Hollenback carver is a classic restorative carving instrument with slim, double-ended blades for shaping anatomy and refining margins. The Three Hollenback Figures

The first option, labelled Fig. ½, is a paired figure with one end of each number. Two more options, labelled Fig. 3 and Fig. 3S, complete the set. Those two share the number 3, while the added S marks a separate catalogue variant. The catalogue does not explain what S stands for. So compare the photos of both number 3 versions closely before you choose.

Carving Margins and Contours

Slim blades let a carver work in tight places. For example, clinicians use Hollenback patterns to remove flash along proximal margins. They also shape marginal ridges and occlusal grooves while the material is still workable. In addition, technicians use carvers on wax patterns, where clean margins matter just as much.

Building a Small Carving Set

Most operators settle on one primary carver and add others for special tasks. First, choose the figure that matches what you already use. Next, consider adding a second figure for interproximal work or finer details. Then keep a spare, because a dull carver drags rather than cuts. Ordering two figures from the same family keeps the handle feel consistent across your tray.
