Description
Hertzler Rib Spreader
The Hertzler rib spreader is a small spreader for opening compact chest incisions. Its blades measure 20 mm wide and 25 mm deep.
Small by design
With a 105 mm spread, it opens far less than full-size models. So it suits small incisions and limited exposures where a big frame would crowd the field. Also, it takes up little room on a crowded field.
What B, H and C mean
In our listing, B marks blade width at 20 mm. Meanwhile, H gives blade depth at 25 mm. Finally, C describes the spread, which tops out at 105 mm.
Shallow blades
A 25 mm blade depth suits a thinner chest wall. Therefore, it may fit smaller patients well. Plus, shallow blades sit low in the incision and leave room for other instruments.
Hertzler or Haight
Both come in one compact size. However, the Hertzler rib spreader has narrower, shallower blades and opens a little wider. So pick by blade size and the width of opening each case needs.
Reprocessing Hertzler rib spreader
Scrub the small blades after each use, paying attention to corners. Then open and close it a few times to check that movement stays smooth. Keep it with other small thoracic tools so it does not get lost among larger spreaders.
