Johns Hopkins Bulldog Clamp

The Johns Hopkins bulldog clamp occludes a blood vessel temporarily during vascular and cardiac work. It comes straight or curved, from 4 cm to 9 cm.

Temporary occlusion

A bulldog clamp stops flow through a vessel for a short time. So the surgeon can open or repair it in a dry field. Then removing the clamp restores flow.

Straight or curved

Straight jaws suit vessels that lie in line with the approach. By contrast, curved jaws help around a bend or in a tight space. Many surgeons keep both styles.

Seven lengths

Sizes run 4, 5, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8 and 9 cm. Also, small sizes suit fine vessels while larger ones suit bigger arteries. Choose the Johns Hopkins bulldog clamp length that fits the vessel.

Care of Johns Hopkins bulldog clamp

Open the clamp gently to clean between the jaws, without forcing it wider than normal. Then rinse and dry each clamp individually. Keep them in a small-parts tray so none go missing.
