Description
Nelson Grasping Forceps
Nelson grasping forceps hold and lift lung tissue during thoracic surgery. At 23 cm, they reach into the chest while the hand stays outside the wound.
Lung handling
Lung tissue tears easily, so it needs a dedicated grasper. These forceps let the surgeon lift a lobe and expose the hilum. Then dissection can proceed with a clear view.
A 23 cm reach
This length reaches the lung through a standard thoracotomy without crowding the incision. Also, it keeps the hand outside the wound edge. That way, the view stays open.
On thoracic sets
Most lung resection trays include one or two Nelson grasping forceps. Meanwhile, teams add other graspers for bowel, vessels or other specific tissue. Plus, a spare pair covers long cases.
Technique tips
Grasp lung tissue gently and avoid twisting it. Next, reposition rather than pull hard when you need more exposure. Also, keep the tips in view at all times. Also, the 23 cm length reaches the hilum from a standard incision. So one pair covers most open lung work.
Cleaning Nelson grasping forceps
Brush the grasping ends with a soft brush, working toward the joint. Then rinse well and check for residue under good light. Dry fully and store in a padded slot.
