Hatchets

A dental hatchet is a hand cutting instrument used to plane enamel and refine the walls of a cavity preparation. Its cutting edge runs in line with the handle, which lets the clinician push or pull it along a wall. Intrace USA offers two hatchet patterns, H13/14 and H15/16, both stocked in Atlanta, Georgia.

H13/14 Versus H15/16

Each label names a double-ended pattern, with paired figures on the two ends. Our supplier lists both as set components, by number only. So the clearest way to compare blade width and angle is through the product photos. Owners of an older H13/14 or H15/16 can simply reorder the same number and keep technique consistent.

Where Hatchets Help Most

Rotary instruments remove bulk quickly, but hand instruments give finer control at the walls. For example, a hatchet can smooth unsupported enamel along a proximal wall. Then it can sharpen line angles before the matrix goes on. Because the edge cuts on a push or pull, the operator controls exactly how much is removed. Many restorative dentists keep hatchets beside excavators for this reason.

Keeping the Cutting Edge True

A hatchet only works well while it stays sharp. Therefore, check the edge under good light after each sterilization cycle. Also, avoid using it to pry or lever, since sideways force can chip a fine cutting edge. Sharpen it with a suitable stone when the edge begins to slide rather than bite.

Inspection and Coverage

Each hatchet is looked over by our staff in America before we ship it. Additionally, hatchet patterns from Intrace USA get three years against manufacturing defects whichever number you choose. They ship unsterilized; wash, dry and autoclave them before restorative appointments.

Our steel meets ASTM F899. Find excavators and other restorative tools in Diagnostic, Periodontal & Restorative Instruments. To round out a preparation kit, add Black’s Cutting Instruments. Our FAQs answer ordering questions.
