Description
Hard Wire Cutters
Heavy wire needs a heavy cutter. These hard wire cutters trim archwire and lab wire that would harm a fine ligature cutter. Four options cover chairside and lab work. Each one has its own rated wire range, so check it before you choose.
Chairside Cuts and Lab Cuts
Some cuts happen in the mouth, for example when you shorten an archwire end. Others happen at the bench, such as when you trim wire for a retainer. The two jobs suit different tools. Therefore, this page includes a lab pattern and three patterns for general clinic use.
The Four Patterns and Their Ranges
- Lab Pattern: for heavier lab wire; the catalogue rates it for .028″ to .045″ (0.87 to 1.1 mm).
- Straight: steel tips for round wire of .012″ to .020″, and rectangular wire to .022″ x .028″.
- 0° (Plain): a plain head that also cuts up to .022″ x .028″.
- 15° Angled: stainless steel tips with a 15° angle, same range as the Straight.
Cut Only What the Cutter Is Rated For
Every cutter has a limit. If you go past it, the edges can chip or roll. So match the wire to the range above. In addition, avoid twisting the cutter while you cut, because that strains the joint. Instead, close the handles with a single firm squeeze.
Choosing for a New Operatory
For a new chair, a Straight or 15° Angled cutter covers most archwire. Then add the Lab Pattern if your team bends retainers or appliances in house. We sell each one singly, so you only buy what you need.
Upkeep and Order Details
After use, wipe the edges and check them against the light. Then oil the joint lightly. The hard wire cutters arrive non-sterile and can return to work after cleaning and sterilization. Our cutters are built to our specification and pass a review by our United States team. Their steel meets ASTM F899. You also get a term of three years against manufacturing defects with each purchase. For fine ties, see the soft wire and ligature cutters. The orthodontic instruments page has more, and the FAQs cover orders.
