Description
Extracting Forceps, Upper Premolars
These upper premolar extracting forceps serve the first and second premolars of the maxilla. Pick an English figure, an American figure or a fitting handle. Every figure comes on its own, with no bundle to buy.
Two numbering systems, one tooth group
English pattern forceps carry European-style figure numbers. American pattern forceps follow US numbering, such as the 150 family. Both treat the same teeth. However, the handle feels different in the palm. So plenty of clinics keep both on hand.
The eight options and how to pick
- English pattern, standard handle: Fig. 7, Fig. 101 and Fig. 136.
- English pattern, fitting handle: Fig. 7 and Fig. 136 with an anatomical grip.
- American Fig. 4: suits upper and lower premolars, so one tool serves both arches.
- American Fig. 150X and Fig. 150XAS: reach upper premolars, incisors and roots.
First, settle on the numbering your hand knows. Next, choose a plain or fitting handle. Finally, add a 150X or 150XAS for front teeth and roots too.
Roots shape the plan
The upper first premolar often has two slim roots. By contrast, the second premolar usually has one. Upper forceps here are mostly straight or bayonet in form, so the beaks follow the long axis of the tooth.
From seating to delivery
Seat the beaks well up on root surface rather than crown enamel. Next, rock the tooth gently toward the cheek and the palate. Because a two-rooted tooth can snap, keep rotation small. Once the socket widens, deliver the tooth.
Plain grip or anatomical grip
A fitting handle has an anatomical shape that fills the palm. In practice, some users find it steadier. The standard handle is slimmer. Both share the same upper premolar extracting forceps beaks.
