A lower wisdom tooth sits far back, often near the ramus and with little room to work. Our lower third molar extracting forceps give you several figures for that tight spot. Like other lower forceps, the beaks meet the handles at about a right angle.

Eight options, two numbering styles

The English figures are Fig. 20, 79, 79A, 79N and 79C. The American figure is Fig. 222. In addition, Fig. 79 and 79A also come with a fitting handle. You buy each option on its own, so one figure can replace a worn one without a full set.

How to narrow the choice

• Start with the numbering you learned, because figure names then match your notes.
• Next, think about mouth opening, since some patients give you little room.
• Then look at root form on the radiograph, for example fused or spread roots.
• Finally, pick the plain or fitting handle for comfort.

So if two figures seem close, choose the one your hand already knows.

When forceps alone are not enough

Many teeth treated with lower third molar extracting forceps come out in one piece. However, a tooth with curved roots may need sectioning first. In that case, split the tooth, then use these forceps to lift each part. As a result, the bone around the socket takes less load.

Working technique at the back of the arch

Slide each beak under the gum onto cementum, below the crown and past the enamel. Then apply firm apical pressure so the beak tips engage the furcation. Next, rock slowly buccal and lingual. Keep the other hand on the mandible to support it while you work.
