Description
Cohen Universal Extracting Forceps
The Cohen universal forceps is an American pattern figure. It comes as a single item with no options. Many clinics keep one in the tray as a backup when a tooth-specific figure is in the sterilizer.
What “universal” means here
Cohen universal forceps aim to serve more than one tooth group. However, no single forceps fits every root well. So treat the Cohen as a useful extra, not a full kit. We do not describe its beak shape in detail. Instead, try it on your own cases and see where it fits your work.
Where it sits in your kit
- Spare for busy days when your main figure sits in reprocessing.
- Travel kits, since one figure takes less space.
- Backup when your usual forceps does not seat well.
Check the beaks before each case
Close the handles and look at the beak tips. Ideally, the two tips touch along their full width, with daylight showing on neither side. Next, look along the inner faces for nicks or burrs. Then open and close the joint to feel for grit. If anything feels rough, set the forceps aside until you clean it again.
General technique
Choose the forceps by arch and tooth group first. Then place both beaks low on the root, clear of enamel. Press up or down along the root before any movement. After that, luxate with steady pressure and short pauses. Finally, ease the tooth out where the socket gives most.
American numbering explained
American figures carry US numbers, while English figures use European numbers. Because of this, the same job may have two different labels. The Cohen belongs to the American group.
Standards, warranty and help
We define the specification, and a reviewer in the United States inspects the Cohen before shipping. Material choice complies with ASTM F899. We honor a full three years against manufacturing defects should the forceps prove faulty. For more figures, see our dental forceps for extraction. Another general option is the universal extracting forceps page. For shipping or returns, go to frequently asked questions. Expect it non-sterile out of the box; a thorough wash and sterilizer run make it ready to reuse.
