Description
Didner 8 P Matrix Retainers
The Didner matrix retainer belongs to the screw-tightened family of band holders used for posterior fillings. It grips a matrix band around the prepared tooth, so the missing proximal wall is replaced while you place material. The 8 P pattern is the catalogue figure for this design. Two versions are available, and the choice mostly comes down to adjustability.
Standard Versus Adjustable, 70 mm
The Standard version is the original Didner 8 P frame. Meanwhile, the Adjustable version appears in the catalogue’s adjustable section with a 70 mm reference. The catalogue does not explain the measurement further, so treat it as the listed size and compare the photos side by side. If your team swaps between tooth sizes in one session, the adjustable model is worth a close look.
When Offices Choose a Didner
Some clinicians learned on a Didner and prefer its feel in the hand. Others keep one for a specific job, such as a tooth where a different frame keeps slipping. In either case, it sits naturally beside Ivory and Tofflemire retainers on a restorative tray. Because it is a separate pattern, staff should keep it in its own cassette slot.
Placing and Removing It
First, loop the band and slide it over the tooth. Then tighten the screw in small turns until the band contacts the tooth all round. Add a wedge at the gingival margin, and burnish the band toward the neighbouring contact. After the material sets, release tension before lifting the frame away.
Material, Inspection and Cover
Both versions are stainless steel. Our people in the United States turn every Didner screw through its full range during inspection. You will receive it non-sterile, which means a wash and an autoclave cycle must come first. A fault in the thread, jaws or body traced to production is something we cover for three years against manufacturing defects.
Visit the ASTM F899 page for implant and instrument steels, see our wider restorative category, and compare the Didner with our Ivory matrix retainers. Order and account help lives in our customer FAQs.
