Description
Ivory Matrix Retainers
When a Class II preparation loses a wall, the restoration needs a temporary one. An Ivory matrix retainer supplies it by holding a thin metal band snug against the tooth. You seat the band, then turn the thumbscrew until the band hugs the contours. Next, a wedge seals the gingival margin, and you are ready to pack or bond.
Ivory 8: The Circumferential Family
Four options share the Ivory 8 name, and these hold a band that wraps the whole tooth. The catalogue lists Fig. 5 with a 5 mm reference, followed by Fig. 6 and Fig. 7 in the same series. Ivory 8 N is a further version from that group. Separately, an Ivory 8 with a 6 mm reference appears in the catalogue’s adjustable section. Because the printed details are brief, compare the photos to judge jaw shape and frame size.
Ivory, Ivory 1 and Ivory 12
The other three patterns also come from the adjustable section of the catalogue:
- Ivory: the base pattern of the line
- Ivory 1: the classic number 1 frame
- Ivory 12: a later figure in the same range
Many dentists already know which number they trained with. So the simplest rule is to reorder the pattern your hands expect. If you are starting fresh, however, an Ivory 8 suits most posterior teeth.
Tightening Without Distorting the Band
Turn the screw slowly and stop once the band contacts the tooth evenly. Overtightening can flatten the band at the contact area. Then burnish the band against the neighbour before placing material. Once the restoration sets, loosen the screw first and lift the retainer off cleanly.
Steel and Our Checks
These retainers are stainless steel throughout. In our United States workshop, staff run each screw from stop to stop to check the thread. Shipment is non-sterile; therefore wash, dry and autoclave the retainer before use. A thread or jaw fault from production is covered for three years against manufacturing defects.
Explore the ASTM F899 stainless steel reference, compare everything in periodontal and restorative instruments, and look at our matrix retainers, Fig. 7 to 13 for other frame shapes. More answers wait in the frequently asked questions.
Matrix retainers are sold for trained dental teams; our care guide and shipping options page have the practical details.
