Description
Dental Bone Chisel
A dental bone chisel removes bone in controlled slices. It suits moments when a bur would run too hot. You set the edge, tap the end with a mallet, and the blade shears a thin layer away. This page lists the chisel in three blade widths, so one design covers fine trimming and broader reduction.
Reading the 3, 6 and 9 mm Widths
Width means the cutting edge span. Therefore, it decides how much bone each tap removes and how much force the mallet must deliver.
- 3mm: narrow work at a thin crest, between roots, or along a small ostectomy line.
- 6mm: the general width for ridge contouring and freeing the edges of a block.
- 9mm: levelling a broad ridge or reducing a wide segment in fewer passes.
Why Many Kits Hold Two Widths
Wide blades move more bone. However, it also spreads the mallet load across a longer edge, so it can be harder to steer near a delicate wall. For that reason, clinicians often pair the 3 mm chisel for finishing with the 6 mm or 9 mm for bulk work. If you only buy one, the 6 mm sits comfortably in the middle.
Keeping the Edge Useful
Sharp bevels cut; dull ones skid. So, protect the edge in a tray slot rather than loose in a cassette, and check it against a light before each case. When the edge rolls or chips, retire or resharpen it before it starts to skid on cortical bone.
Where This Chisel Comes From
Intrace USA distributes from Atlanta. Before any chisel leaves, a person on our Georgia team inspects its bevel and shank. Since it comes unsterilized, wash the blade and autoclave it ahead of surgery. Also, a chisel with a faulty bevel or cracked shank from production is replaced, because each width is guaranteed for three years against manufacturing defects.
The surgical stainless steel follows the ASTM F899 specification. You can compare related tools in Dental Implant Instruments, and the Mead mallet gives a balanced strike for chisel work. Common questions are answered in our FAQs.
Chisel work belongs in the hands of trained dental and oral surgeons. Before the first case, read how we suggest you reprocess steel instruments, and check when orders ship.
