Amalgam Condensers and Pluggers
Condensing turns loose amalgam into a dense, well adapted restoration. Also, the plugger face size controls how much force reaches each increment. This page collects nine named patterns that our supplier lists as components of its restorative sets. Each amalgam condenser is sold singly, so you can replace one worn plugger or build a tray around the patterns you prefer.
The Nine Patterns on Offer
- Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3: three numbered patterns under one name, listed with smooth faces
- Smith: listed in the catalogue with smooth and serrated faces
- Mort 2: a smooth faced pattern
- Hollenback 1: listed with smooth and serrated faces
- Black ½: a pattern named after G.V. Black
- Detroit 1: a smooth faced pattern
- Mar 0/1: listed as pluggers and condensers
Smooth or Serrated Faces
Smooth faces leave a polished surface and are easy to clean. Serrated faces, by comparison, help the plugger bite into each increment so material does not slide. Where the catalogue mentions both for one name, check the product photo to see which face your option shows. If in doubt, ask us before ordering and we will confirm.
Picking Plugger Sizes for a Tray
Most clinicians start with a smaller face for the proximal box and line angles. Then they move to a larger face for the bulk of the occlusal fill. So a numbered family such as Ward 1 to 3 lets you stay within one design; compare their photos to see each face. Alternatively, mix eponyms if your hands favour different shank angles.
Before shipping, each condenser has its face and shank examined at our United States site. Your Ward, Smith or Mort plugger arrives unsterilized and must be cleaned and autoclaved first. Also, Intrace USA covers these named pluggers for three years against manufacturing defects plugger by plugger.
Plugger steel follows ASTM F899 for surgical stainless. Explore the restorative hand instrument range, load material from an Amalgam Well Pot, or find answers in our FAQs.
