Description

Bone Morselizer

In practice, harvested bone rarely arrives in a usable size. Block fragments from a rongeur or chisel are too coarse to pack, so they need crushing first. A bone morselizer does that by hand: the surgeon places the fragments in the instrument and compresses them into smaller pieces. The result is particulate bone that can be mixed and placed.

One Pattern, Shown in the Photos

This page offers a single catalogue pattern. However, the supplier catalogue gives it no written dimensions. For that reason, the product photos are the best guide to its size and jaw shape. If you need a specific measurement, contact us before ordering and we will help where we can.

Morselizer, Mill or Rongeur?

Each tool has its place. First, a rongeur removes bone from the site. Then, a morselizer crushes those fragments by squeezing. A rotary bone mill, by comparison, grinds them by turning a handle. Many teams keep a morselizer for small harvests, because it is quick to load and easy to clean.

Keeping the Harvest Viable

Speed and moisture matter. So, crush bone soon after collection and keep it covered with saline or blood. Next, transfer the particles to a bowl or packer. Also, avoid overcrushing, since the surgeon may want some larger pieces. Each of these choices follows the operator’s own protocol.

Finish, Inspection and Coverage

In terms of material, the morselizer is surgical stainless steel. Inspection of every unit takes place in the United States, where our team checks that the crushing faces meet evenly. It ships non-sterile, so clear every crevice of the crushing faces during cleaning, then autoclave. The morselizer carries a promise of three years against manufacturing defects in its hinge and faces.

Steel information lives in the ASTM F899 listing. See all maxillofacial instruments, pack the crushed particles with a bone graft compactor, and read our FAQs for help.

Morselizers are sold only to trained surgical professionals. See the sterilization guide and our delivery policy.
