Black Cavity Preparation Instruments
Before rotary handpieces dominated, G.V. Black designed a numbered system of hand cutters for shaping cavity walls, and dentists still rely on them for refinement. These black cavity preparation instruments sit on the filling instrument pages of our supplier’s catalogue. Hand cutters let you plane enamel walls and define line angles with a control a bur cannot match. Six options are available: three patterns, each in two handle styles.
26 Distal, 53-54 and 51-52
The catalogue labels them by Black number. The 26 Distal is a single-number pattern marked Distal, meaning its blade is oriented for the distal wall. Next, 53-54 is listed as Fig. 1 and 51-52 as Fig. 2. A hyphenated pair of numbers usually signals a double-ended instrument. Because the catalogue prints no dimensions, compare photos to see blade width and angle before ordering.
Style 2 Handles
All three patterns appear on two consecutive catalogue pages. So Style 2 is the second row: the same Black figure on another handle pattern that the catalogue leaves unnamed. If your trays already hold one of the two, match the photo you recognise. Otherwise, pick the handle that feels better balanced in your grip.
Using Hand Cutters in Modern Preparations
For example, after a bur opens a Class II box, a hand cutter planes away unsupported enamel along the walls. Then the clinician refines line angles so the restoration seats with sound margins. These steps are quick once you know the instruments, and they help keep tooth structure where it belongs.
Our United States team checks every Black cutter for edge quality and alignment before dispatch. Since they ship non-sterile, wash and autoclave each one before use. In addition, Intrace USA guarantees all six Black options for three years against manufacturing defects, cutting edges included.
Cutter steel conforms to ASTM F899 for stainless dental instruments. Browse our restorative instrument category, finish the cervical wall with Black Gingival Margin Trimmers, or read our FAQs.
