Description
Band Contouring Pliers, Convex & Concave
Stock bands rarely hug a tooth on the first try. These band contouring pliers let you curve the band wall so it follows the crown before you cement it. There are two beak forms, one for the front of the mouth and one for the back.
Two Beak Shapes for Two Tooth Groups
The options differ only in beak form, so the tooth you are fitting makes the choice:
- Concave (Bicuspids & Molars): concave beaks for bicuspid and molar bands, where the wall wraps a broad crown.
- Convex (Incisors): convex beaks for incisor bands, where the surface is narrow.
- We sell each option on its own, so you can add the other form later.
Shaping a Band at the Chair
First, try the band on the tooth and note where it stands away from the surface. Then grip that part of the wall between the beaks and squeeze in small steps. In practice, two or three light passes beat one hard squeeze.
Why Contour Before Cementing
A band that follows the crown sits more evenly. It also leaves a thin, even cement line with fewer gaps at the margin. As a result, the band tends to stay put through archwire changes, and the patient feels fewer sharp edges.
A Natural Partner for Seating Tools
Contouring and seating go hand in hand. Once the wall has the right curve, you press it home with a pusher or seater. For that reason, many offices keep both band contouring pliers forms on the banding tray.
Keeping the Beaks Smooth
Look at the beaks after each case. They should meet along their full length with no rock. Also wipe off cement while it is still soft, because set cement can scar the beak face and mark the next band.
Contouring Pliers: Steel, Cover and Ordering
Every pair follows a drawing we set, and a team in the United States looks it over. Its stainless alloy matches ASTM F899. Should a factory flaw appear, the pliers carry three years against manufacturing defects. They ship non-sterile; clean and sterilize them, then reuse them on later cases.
