What Skirting Means

Skirting shapes the lower rim of a band or crown so it follows the tooth. First, you try the band on. Then you work the edge with the plier until it sits close all the way round.

Fitting Before Cementation

This step comes just before you cement. A close margin needs less cement and leaves a cleaner seal. Also, a band that hugs the tooth is less likely to loosen later in treatment.

Step by Step at the Chair

• Seat the band and note where it stands away from the tooth.
• Remove it and skirt that part of the edge in small moves.
• Try it again and repeat until the fit feels even.

Bands and Crowns, Not Wire

Keep this plier for band and crown work. Wire bending can nick the beaks, and a nicked beak will mark thin band material. For wire, use a plier made for wire instead.

Caring for the Working Ends

Band material leaves fine debris in the joint. For that reason, scrub the beaks and hinge soon after use. Then dry it and apply a light film of lubricant before you sterilize.
