Description
Bailey-Gibbon Rib Contractor Long Claw
The Bailey-Gibbon rib contractor draws adjacent ribs together as the surgeon closes the chest. Its long claws reach around the ribs for a firm hold.
What a rib contractor does
After a thoracotomy, the ribs need to come back together before closure. So the contractor hooks around the ribs above and below the incision. Then the surgeon brings them closer while tying sutures.
Long claws
Long claws give extra reach around thicker ribs or deeper placement. By contrast, short-claw models suit cases that need less reach. Therefore, many thoracic sets keep both types.
15 cm or 16 cm
The two sizes differ only slightly in overall length. However, the right fit makes it easier to position the claws. Also, surgeons often pick by habit and by the size of their usual patients.
Using it with a spreader
Rib spreaders open the chest, while contractors help close it. For example, a team may open with a rib spreader and finish with the Bailey-Gibbon rib contractor. In addition, keep both on the same thoracic tray so nobody has to fetch one mid-case.
Reprocessing Bailey-Gibbon rib contractor
Scrub the claws well, since tissue collects where they hook around bone. Then move the instrument through its full range to confirm smooth action. Finally, dry and store it where the claws cannot catch on other items.
