Description
Crafoord-Sellors Auricle Forceps
Crafoord-Sellors forceps grasp and hold the auricle, or atrial appendage, during heart surgery. They come in 22, 23 and 24 cm.
Holding the appendage
Some cardiac procedures require control of the atrial appendage. So surgeons use auricle forceps to hold it steady. Then the team can work around it with a clear view.
Three lengths
The 22 cm size suits smaller chests and shallow access. By contrast, the 24 cm size reaches deeper structures. The middle 23 cm length covers most adult cases.
Crafoord-Sellors in context
Surgeons who trained with Crafoord-Sellors forceps often ask for them by name. Also, the pattern pairs well with other auricle clamps on a valve set. Therefore many centers keep at least one pair.
Stocking tips
Keep two lengths on hand if your patients and approaches vary a lot from case to case. Alternatively, standardize on 23 cm for simpler sets. Next, label trays so the right size reaches the right room.
Cleaning Crafoord-Sellors forceps
Rinse the jaws right after the case, before proteins set. Then soak briefly in an enzymatic solution if your protocol allows it. Finally, dry the joint area well and keep the tips protected in storage.
