Description
Overholt-Mixter Auricle Forceps
Overholt-Mixter forceps serve as dissecting and auricle forceps in chest and heart surgery. They come in 20 cm and 21 cm.
Two roles
As dissecting forceps, they help separate tissue planes around structures in the chest. Also, as auricle forceps, they can hold the atrial appendage. That dual role saves space on the tray.
The name
The name joins two well-known thoracic surgeons, Overholt and Mixter. Many surgeons link Mixter with right-angle dissectors. However, check the product photos to confirm the tip shape you need.
Choosing a length
The 20 cm size suits most adult cases. Meanwhile, the 21 cm option suits a slightly deeper field. Both lengths of Overholt-Mixter forceps serve the same tasks.
Where they sit
Cardiac and thoracic sets often carry these forceps near the clamps. Then the surgeon can switch from dissection to holding quickly. Plus, a spare pair covers a busy list. Plus, both lengths fit a standard thoracic tray.
Reprocessing Overholt-Mixter forceps
Open the forceps and clear tissue from the tips with a soft brush. Next, flush the joint so no blood stays hidden. Dry them and confirm the tips still line up before storage.
