Cooley Suction Tube

The Cooley suction tube clears blood and fluid from the field during cardiovascular surgery. Three diameters let you match flow to the case.

Diameter and length

The 7 mm tube measures 30 cm long. Meanwhile, the 8 mm tube runs 35 cm, and the 10 mm tube runs 31 cm. So each size pairs a diameter with its own reach.

Choosing a diameter

A narrow tube gives fine control around delicate structures. By contrast, a wider tube moves larger volumes quickly. Many teams keep a Cooley suction tube in two diameters.

In cardiac cases

Cardiac surgery can produce heavy bleeding at short notice. Therefore a large-bore tube should stay within reach. Also, a small-bore tube helps around fine suture lines.

Setting up

Attach the tube to your suction line before the case starts. Then test the flow before the first incision so problems show up early. Next, keep a spare tube ready in case of blockage.

Cleaning Cooley suction tube

Flush the lumen right after use so blood cannot clot inside. Then pass a cleaning brush of matching diameter through the full length. Finally, rinse again and check that light passes clearly through the tube.
