Description
Sellors Rib Contractor
The Sellors rib contractor draws the ribs back together before the chest wall closes. It comes in 18 cm and 19 cm.
A longer frame
At 18 to 19 cm, this contractor runs longer than our Bailey models. So it may suit larger adult chests. Also, the extra length gives more room for the surgeon’s hands.
Step by step
First, the surgeon seats the instrument across the incision on the ribs above and below. Next, they bring the ribs together until the gap closes. Then sutures hold the ribs and the instrument comes out.
Two sizes
The 18 cm and 19 cm versions differ by just a centimeter. However, that can change how the instrument sits over a wide chest. Pick by surgeon preference and the typical patient build your unit sees.
Sellors or Bailey?
Both patterns do the same job at chest closure. By contrast, the Sellors rib contractor offers more length, while Bailey models stay compact. So many adult sets carry one of each to cover different chest sizes.
Cleaning Sellors rib contractor
Remove blood and tissue from the claws soon after closure. Then check for smooth, even movement across the full range. Dry it well and store it in a thoracic tray with room for its size.
