Description
Ash Excavators
Rotary burs remove bulk decay quickly, but a hand excavator gives tactile feedback as you approach sound dentin. The Ash pattern is a long-standing restorative design, and this page offers two of its figures. Each ash excavator is sold individually. So you can add the one you prefer, or both, to a restorative tray without buying a whole kit.
Fig. 243 and Fig. G2
The catalogue lists these two on its excavators page as Ash Fig. 243 and Ash Fig. G2. It gives the figure numbers only, without written dimensions or blade descriptions. Consequently, judge spoon size and shank angle from the two Ash images. Look at each image, then pick the figure that matches the excavator you already reach for, or the gap you want to fill.
How Clinicians Use an Excavator
First, the spoon edge is placed at the margin of the soft dentin. Then it is drawn across the lesion in a scooping motion, lifting decay away in flakes. As the dentin becomes harder and drier, the clinician stops and checks whether further removal is needed. Because the instrument is held like a pen, fine control is easy near the pulp.
Building a Pair of Ash Figures
Many dentists keep two excavator figures: one for narrow access and another for wider lesions. If you are unsure which suits you, ordering Fig. 243 and Fig. G2 together lets you compare them in your own hand. After a few cases, most clinicians settle on a favourite.
Before leaving us, each Ash figure gets a look from our United States inspectors for spoon sharpness and shank alignment. Because excavators ship non-sterile, clean and autoclave them first. Furthermore, Ash buyers get three years against manufacturing defects excavator by excavator from Intrace USA.
Excavator steel meets the ASTM F899 specification. Explore our diagnostic, periodontal and restorative tools, compare the Angular Excavators with Rounded Tip, or read the FAQs.
