Aorta Punch

The aortic punch cuts a clean, round opening in the aorta for a proximal graft anastomosis. It measures 16 cm and comes in five diameters.

Choose 2.8, 4, 4.5, 5 or 6 mm. So the opening can match the graft you plan to attach. Smaller sizes suit fine vein grafts, while larger ones fit bigger conduits.

Why a round hole

A round opening gives an even edge for suturing. By contrast, a slit may not sit as evenly around the graft. Therefore many cardiac surgeons prefer to punch rather than cut.

Bypass surgery

Coronary bypass often places vein grafts on the ascending aorta. Then the instrument creates each site for a proximal connection. As a result, the team may use it several times in one case.

Stocking sizes

Order the aortic punch in the sizes that match your graft habits. For example, 4 and 4.5 mm cover many vein grafts. Plus, a spare of your most used size prevents delays if one goes out for service.

Cleaning aortic punch

Open it and remove any tissue plug straight after use. Next, scrub the cutting end with a small brush under running water. Finally, dry it and store it with the cutting edge protected.
