SHO Amalgam Carvers
Amalgam gives the dentist a short window between condensing and setting. Carving has to happen inside it. An SHO amalgam carver lets the clinician remove excess and define fissures. It also restores cusp form while the alloy is still workable. Intrace USA, a distributor of hand instruments in Atlanta, lists two SHO figures, and each carver is checked over in the United States before it leaves.
3-SHO Compared With SHO-A
Both figures share the SHO name and appear on the same catalogue page:
- 3-SHO: the numbered SHO figure, listed as Fig. 3-SHO.
- SHO-A: the lettered SHO figure, listed as Fig. SHO-A.
The catalogue shows the working ends but gives no measurements. Therefore, use the photos to compare blade outlines with the carver you use today.
From Condensation to Final Contour
First, the amalgam is condensed into the preparation and overfilled slightly. Next, the carver removes the excess back to the cavosurface margin. Then the clinician shapes the cusps and grooves so the restoration matches the opposing teeth. Finally, articulating paper confirms the bite before the patient leaves.
Picking One or Both
If your restorative tray already holds an SHO carver, read its label and reorder the same figure. However, many dentists like having two carving shapes, because each suits a different surface. So ordering both 3-SHO and SHO-A gives you a matched pair for posterior work.
Keeping Carving Edges Clean
Set amalgam clings to steel and can scratch the edges if it hardens there. So wipe the blade with gauze between strokes and clean it straight after the appointment. SHO carvers leave us non-sterile, so they need cleaning and autoclaving before first use. Whether you pick 3-SHO or SHO-A, our carver pledge spans three years against manufacturing defects.
Each SHO carver is cut from stainless steel complying with ASTM F899. See more restorative instruments in our restorative instrument listings, add Cleoid-Discoid Carvers for occlusal anatomy, or open our FAQ section for dentists.
