Description
Cleoid-Discoid Carvers
Few hand instruments are as familiar on a restorative tray as the cleoid-discoid carver. One end is the cleoid, a pointed, claw-like blade for grooves and fissures. The other is the discoid, a disc-shaped blade for broad occlusal surfaces and margins. Together they let you rebuild anatomy in amalgam before it sets. Our supplier shows two full series on its amalgam carver page, and we carry them all.
Round Working Tip or Oval Working Tip
The catalogue splits the series by tip outline. Each tip outline, round or oval, is offered in four figures numbered one through four. So the first choice is tip shape: round or oval. Then the figure number picks the pattern within that series. The catalogue does not give blade dimensions per figure, so use the photos to judge size.
The CD 3/6 Set Pattern
CD 3/6 is the cleoid-discoid that ships inside one of our supplier’s instrument sets. We sell it on its own for practices that want to replace a single piece from that set. It is listed by name only.
Carving Before the Set
- Rest the blade partly on enamel so it rides the margin.
- Carve with short strokes toward the restoration.
- Then refine grooves with the cleoid point.
Because amalgam hardens quickly, a sharp edge saves time and avoids chipping. Also, keep a burnisher nearby for the final smoothing.
Every cleoid-discoid is inspected in the United States for blade symmetry and a clean edge before it leaves our stock. The carver arrives non-sterile, so remove packing film, wash it and steam it in your autoclave before the first restoration. In addition, each round tip, oval tip and CD 3/6 carver stays guaranteed: three years against manufacturing defects present from the factory.
Its stainless steel is graded to ASTM F899. To finish what you carve, add our burnishers, browse the full 656 restorative and diagnostic range, or open our FAQs for ordering help.
