Wax Knives with Spoon

A wax knife with spoon combines a cutting blade and a small spoon on one stainless steel instrument. Dental technicians and clinicians use it to cut, carry and add wax when building patterns, bite rims and wax-ups. Fig. 1 measures 12.5 cm and carries the small spoon. The shorter length gives close control at the bench, so it suits detailed work on single units and smaller patterns. Technicians who add wax in small increments often prefer the small spoon because it holds a modest amount at a time.

Fig. 2: Large Spoon, 17 cm

Fig. 2 is the longer instrument at 17 cm, with the large spoon. That extra reach and capacity help when you move more wax, for example on bite rims or larger contours. In addition, the longer handle keeps fingers further from a heat source while you work.

Choosing Between 12.5 and 17 cm

Pick by the size of the job. Fine pattern work points to Fig. 1, while bulk shaping points to Fig. 2. Many labs keep both on the bench, since each spoon size covers a different stage of the same case. Then the knife blade on either figure handles trimming and cutting of set wax.

Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 are stainless steel, and every 12.5 or 17 cm wax knife passes a United States hand check before boxing.
